Podcast post-production - getting to your publish date
Ok, so you’ve recorded your podcast, what next?
Our producer was hot on the heels of the recording session, sending the raw audio files to the editor alongside notes taken during the recording session. This gave the editor a clear picture of what she was working with.
Here’s our tips for a smooth post-production:
🟡 If possible the producer should take notes during the recording so the editor has details about pick-ups, any mistakes or stumbles and bits that you know will need to be cut or prioritised
🟡 Check with guests on the day to make sure they are happy with everything they said. This should avoid everyone needing to hear or approve the final edit, just deal with any issues on the day leaving a clear note for the editor
🟡 If there is something particularly sensitive being discussed you may want to give the guest approval on a particular section of the podcast - we identified one question, where a guest talked about the death of a friend. To give them piece of mind we sent them the clip to make sure they were comfortable with it being included
🟡 You might want to include a trigger warning if sensitive topics are discussed, if you forgot to record this on the day, you can do a pick-up with a remote recording - we used a Tascam recorder and a professional mic to do this and the sound quality matched up great
🟡 Work closely with the editor, the more information they have the better the first edit will be and the less time you’ll be billed for re-edits
🟡 Once the first edit is ready make sure it’s sent to everyone who needs to approve it and collate all feedback for the editor. Ideally this should be done via a cloud hosted document, for example, on Google Drive, so everyone’s comments are in one place
🟡 When all revisions are done and the podcast has been approved it’s a good idea to pull together all of the marketing imagery, thumbnails and video clips so all of the social assets can be created ahead of publishing
And when everything is done, you are ready to publish.
